Serb Renato Grbic, a restaurant owner near the bridge over the Danube,has the title of unofficial “superman”, pulling out desperate people out of the river. 51-year-old businessman from Belgrade Renato Grbic in the past 15 years has saved 25 people who tried to commit suicide in front of him in the industrial area on the outskirts of the city.
The owner of a small restaurant, which is located near the bridge over the Danube in the Serbian capital helps people who decided to jump into the river from a height of 18 meters.
– I first encountered the suicide act, when I was fishing on the river with my brother. Suddenly, I heard a heavy splash and thought at first that something was thrown from the bridge, but then saw a man waving his arms. We dragged him into the boat, and I remember saying to him, “Today, this day, and you want to kill yourself!” – Says the local hero. Since then restaurateur is always ready in case another desperate rush into icy waters of the Danube.
– While I’m working,I always watch over the bridge – I just can not turn away from those who decided to voluntarily withdraw from life – shared Renato. Over the years, Grbic pulled people of all ages from the river. Often rescued admitted that the reason for their actions were incurable diseases, poverty, or unrequited love, but all agreed that they felt lonely.
Of the 25 people who Renato gave another chance, only one girl maintains constant contact with him and each year comes to his restaurant to celebrate with him her second birthday. – It’s been seven years, but every time I see her, my heart stops. Now she is – a completely different person, wife and mother.
